Unraveling the Mysteries of Weight Gain: Signs of Hormonal Imbalance

Updated: 5 days ago

Even if you're eating well and exercising regularly, sometimes it feels like the weight just won't come off. It's common to feel frustrated and discouraged when this happens. But don't worry, you're not alone. Every day in my practice I speak with women who are wondering about how their hormones may be impacting their overall health and their ability to loose weight.

Understanding the signs of hormonal imbalance can be the key to unlocking more energy, vitality and shed the unwanted extra weight.

Let's take a closer look at the signs that your hormones might be out of balance and how we can help you get them back on track.

Insulin Resistance: Unraveling the Cravings

One of the chief culprits behind hormonal weight gain is insulin resistance.

This condition wreaks havoc on your body's ability to effectively manage blood sugar levels, leading to a cascade of symptoms including increased hunger, cravings for sweets, fatigue, skin tags and mood swings.

If you find yourself battling constant urges for sugary treats, experiencing post-meal fatigue, or struggling with concentration issues, your insulin levels may be out of whack.

TIP: insulin levels in blood work have a very large range of what is considered normal, and therefore your medical doctor may miss this hormone imbalance.

Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH): Conquering the Cold and Fatigue

Another hormone that can throw a wrench into your weight loss journey is high levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

When TSH levels are elevated, it can manifest as fatigue, cold sensitivity, dry skin, constipation, and even depression. If you're perpetually feeling sluggish, noticing changes in your skin and hair texture, or struggling with mood swings, it may be time to investigate your thyroid function.

It is important to do a full thyroid panel and to analyze those results for optimal thyroid function, not just normal functioning.

TIP: Most medical doctors do not regularly test the active thyroid hormone called Free T3. If this has not been tested, you are missing a vital piece of the thyroid puzzle.

High Estrogen/Low Progesterone: Navigating the Hormonal Rollercoaster

An imbalance between estrogen and progesterone can also contribute to stubborn weight gain, particularly around the hips and thighs.

Symptoms such as water retention, bloating, irregular menstrual cycles, and mood swings are telltale signs of this hormonal disturbance.

TIP: for women who have a regular menstrual cycle, you need to test estrogen on day 3 of your cycle and again on day 21 (or 6-8 days after ovulation. Progesterone needs to be tested on day 21 (or 6-8 days after ovulation).

High Cortisol: Taming the Stress Monster

Stress, often dubbed the modern-day epidemic, plays a significant role in hormonal imbalance, particularly when it comes to cortisol levels.

Elevated cortisol levels can lead to increased abdominal fat, muscle weakness, mood swings, and sleep disturbances.

If you're struggling to manage stress and noticing changes in your body composition and mood, cortisol may be at the root of your hormonal woes.

Navigating the Path to Hormonal Harmony

Now that we've identified the main players that could be involved with hormone imbalances, it's time to plot a course towards hormonal harmony.

Understanding the underlying reasons behind hormonal disruption is crucial in formulating an effective strategy for rebalancing your hormones and achieving your weight loss goals.

High exposure to environmental toxins, unresolved emotional trauma, poor detox pathways, and chronic stressors can all contribute to hormonal imbalance.

Crafting a Protocol for Hormonal Rebalance: A Holistic Approach

Once we've identified the factors contributing to hormonal imbalance, it's time to devise a personalized protocol for hormone rebalance. This holistic approach may encompass;

  • dietary / nutrition modifications

  • targeted supplementation for the liver
